Donald Klanko, age 83 of Ansonia, husband of the late Theresa Esposito Klanko, died peacefully on November 15, 2022, in the comfort of his home, surrounded by his family.  Born in Derby on February 19, 1939, he was the son of the late Peter and Julia Honas Klanko.  Mr. Klanko was a lifelong resident of Ansonia, a graduate of Ansonia High School and a proud U.S. Navy Veteran, serving from 1958 to 1962. Together with his wife, they operated the former Klanko’s Grocery Store on Wakelee Avenue, Ansonia, for over 40 years, until retiring in 2010.   Mr. Klanko was an avid musician and a longtime supporter of the Connecticut Hurricanes Drum and Bugle Corps.  His spirit and zest for adventure fueled his passion for traveling and many hobbies, including powerboating, water skiing and sailing on Long Island Sound. He obtained his private pilot’s license and flew small aircraft from the Ansonia Airport; and on one occasion, even flew his family over Disney World, FL!  He was a skilled alpine skier, able to conquer the most challenging mountains of Vermont, and the ski resorts of Aspen & Vail, Colorado.  He will be long remembered as a dedicated husband, father and brother.  He is survived by his devoted children, Donna Klanko of Ansonia and Richard (Rita Perez) Klanko of CA; a brother, Peter (Maria) Klanko of Waterbury; as well as several nieces and nephews.  In addition to his wife of 47 years, he was predeceased by a son, Kevin Klanko; and brothers, Michael and Joseph Klanko.  Funeral services will be private.  Interment at the convenience of the family, will take place in Sts. Peter and Paul Cemetery, Derby. The Wakelee Memorial Funeral Home, 167 Wakelee Avenue, Ansonia is in care of arrangements.  Online condolences may be made at www.wakeleememorial.com.
