Obituary of Antone Robert Opekun
Antone Robert Opekun, age 91 of Orange, beloved husband of the late Ann Lauder Opekun, died peacefully on May 29, 2022 at the West Haven VA Medical Center. Born in New Haven on March 27, 1931, he was the son of the late Antone and Mary Kubisch Opekun. Mr. Opekun was a lifelong resident of Orange and member of Three Saints Orthodox Church. He was a proud U.S. Navy Veteran of the Korean War and an active member of the VFW, Post 1284, Seymour. Mr. Opekun was an Automotive Instructor for the Pine and Eli Whitney Vocational Technical High Schools, as well as a master mechanic for the former Andy’s Garage of Pershing Dr., Ansonia. He took pride in wearing his Navy uniform for many Memorial Day Parades and veteran’s functions. Throughout his many years of volunteer service with the VFW, it is estimated that Mr. Opekun single handedly raised over 20,000.00 in poppy sales. He was a member of the King Hiram Lodge 12 and the George Washington Lodge 82, AF and AM, for nearly 70 years. He is survived by his devoted sons, Antone (Julia) Opekun of TX and Matthew (Robin) Opekun of Naugatuck; cherished grandchildren, Curtis (Laura) Opekun of NC, Rebecca (Marc) Lascko of Thomaston, and Alexander of TX; great-grandchildren, Tanner and Kaitlyn Opekun of NC, Hunter and Maxx Lascko of Thomaston. Funeral services will be held on Friday, June 3, 2022, at 10:00 AM in the Wakelee Memorial Funeral Home, 167 Wakelee Avenue, Ansonia. Interment with Military Honors will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery, Ansonia. Family and friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday, June 2, 2022 from 4:00 to 7:00 PM.
