Obituary of Mary Piorkowski

PIORKOWSKI- Mary Worobel Piorkowski, age 89, beloved wife of the late Casimir Piorkowski, died July 19, 2009, at Hartford Hospital, just five days shy of her 90th birthday. Born in Ansonia on July 24, 1919, she was the daughter of the late Theodore Frank and Anna Spiwak Worobel. A graduate of Ansonia High School, Mrs. Piorkowski worked for many years on the candy counter at Murphy's Five and Dime of Ansonia and later at Penny's of Derby. She served her community as the head moderator for voting in Derby. She was a member of the Russian-American Club of Shelton, the Shelton, Derby and Ansonia Senior Centers, and the Sts. Peter and Paul Ladies Guild. Mrs. Piorkowski loved Cape Cod, sharing her cottage with her children and grandchildren, as well as traveling with her late husband, Casey. She is survived by her devoted children and their spouses, Carol Kowalski and her husband, Carl, of MA; Dr. Robert Piorkowski of Wethersfield, and Diane Hamilton and her husband, Robert, of VT; sisters, Esther Rozum and Olga Kowalsky, both of Seymour; eight cherished grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren; as well as many nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband of 68 years, Mrs. Piorkowski was predeceased by her twin sister, Martha Tuz, sister, June Chucta, and brothers, John and Michael Worobel. Funeral services will take place on Thursday, July 23, 2009, at 9:15 am from the Wakelee Memorial Funeral Home, 167 Wakelee Ave., Ansonia. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in St. Michael Church, 75 Derby Ave., Derby, at 10:00 AM. Interment will follow in Sts. Peter and Paul Cemetery, Derby. Family and friends may call on Wednesday, July 22, 2009, from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at the Wakelee Memorial Funeral Home.
