Obituary of Vera May Barrett

Vera May Barrett, age 99 of Derby, beloved wife of the late James Dalton Barrett, peacefully entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, August 5, 2020, at Griffin Hospital, surrounded by her family. Mrs. Barrett was born in St. Mary’s, Jamaica, on April 19, 1921, daughter of the late Ernest and Nilla Gordon. In Jamaica she worked as a hairdresser, cake baker and in the sugar cane fields. Vera was devout follower of the Seventh Day Adventist Church and found great joy in singing gospel hymns. After immigrating to the United States in 1968, Mrs. Barrett worked as a domestic worker for a family in Westport. She then was employed at Derby Cellular for over 20 years, until the time of her retirement. Following her retirement, Vera devoted her time to help raise her grandchildren and great grandchildren; she will be long remembered for her special love and devotion to her family. Mrs. Barrett is survived by a daughter, Marcia Walters of Seymour; a daughter-in-law, Janet Barrett of Derby; sons, Winston Lofters of FL, Derek Lofters of FL, Leopold “Bunny” Lofters of GA; sisters, Eula Morgan (101 years old) and Esther Forbes (95 years old), both of Canada and a brother Mandell (Chappy) Gordon (91 years old) of Jamaica. She is also survived by several grandchildren, nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews and ten great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, James Dalton Barrett, she was predeceased by her six brothers, Willie Gordon, Clinton Gordon, Author Gordon, Clarence Gordon, twin brothers Beechem and Leslie Gordon; two sisters, Doris Gordon and Luna Gordon; a son, Orville Barrett and two daughters, Gloria Lofters and Maud Barrett. A Memorial Service will be announced in the near future. The Wakelee Memorial Funeral Home, 167 Wakelee Avenue, Ansonia is in care of arrangements.
