Obituary of John Chucta

John Chucta, age 93 of Seymour, beloved husband of the late June Ann Worobel Chucta, died peacefully on May 9, 2020 at St. Mary’s Hospital, Waterbury. Born in Derby on March 10, 1927, he was the son of the late Max and Esther Hyra Chucta. Mr. Chucta was a lifelong resident of Seymour and was raised on his family’s farm. At the age of 14, together with his brother, Stephen, and his sister, Dorothy, he operated the Chucta family dairy farm, delivering milk (without a driver’s license) to many customers throughout the valley. Mr. Chucta worked as a millwright for the Kerite Company of Seymour for over 30 years, until the time of his retirement in 1989. While employed at Kerite, he was a founding member of the Kerite Fire Brigade. Mr. Chucta was a lifelong member of Sts. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church of Ansonia and was a member of the Great Hill Hose Company #1, Seymour, where he served as a Past Captain and dedicated volunteer for many years. He served the Town of Seymour as a longtime member of the Board of Public Works, as well as being Past Commissioner of the Board of Public Works. He enjoyed fishing and gardening in his spare time, but more over - he was an original “do it yourself-er”. Coupled with his strong work ethic, reinforced from his youthful experience on the farm, Mr. Chucta was often found tinkering, puttering and repairing just about everything. He found great solace in the peace and natural beauty of Vermont, where he owned a cabin and appreciated his winter getaways with his family. He was a skilled alpine skier. He will be long remembered as a devoted husband, father and grandfather; a role model and true gentleman, never looking for recognition for his contributions or achievements. He is survived by his devoted children, Gary (Nancy) Chucta of Seymour, Thomas (Janet) Chucta of Prospect and Lois Chucta Culmo of LI, NY; seven cherished grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; as well as several nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife of 59 years, Mr. Chucta was predeceased by his brother, Stephen Chucta and sister, Dorothy Wetowitz. Due to the social restrictions of the Covid 19 Pandemic, all funeral services will be private. Memorial contributions may be made to the Great Hill Hose Company #1, 140 Botsford Road, Seymour, CT 06483. The Wakelee Memorial Funeral Home, 167 Wakelee Avenue, Ansonia is in care of arrangements.
