Obituary of John Adzima

ADZIMA- John J. Adzima, age 77 of Ansonia, former Assistant Superintendent of Schools, died January 1, 2012 at Griffin Hospital, surrounded by his family. Born in Derby on February 6, 1934 he was the son of the late John J. and Anna T. Gido Adzima. Mr. Adzima was a lifelong resident of Ansonia and member of Sts. Peter and Paul Church. He was a graduate of Ansonia High School, UCONN and received his M.A. in Education from Fordham University. Mr. Adzima worked for 25 years as the Coordinator for Elementary Education for the Ansonia Board of Education, retiring in 1993. Prior to his position with the Ansonia Board of Education, he worked as a 6th grade teacher in Meriden and then accepted a position at the Seymour Middle School, later becoming the first Principal of Chatfield School, Seymour. Mr. Adzima served as Principal of Prendergast, Larkin and Mead Schools and the Central Office Administrator. He was the coordinator of Chapter One, Staff Development, EERA, and Testing. A quiet gentleman, Mr. Adzima shared relationships with people of all social backgrounds, as well as being active in many community and church affairs, never wanting recognition for his contributions. His life and career were devoted to helping others and his wish was for that legacy to be carried forward. He is survived by his devoted sister, Virginia "Ginny" Fainer; nephew Edward "Butch" Fainer, Jr. and his companion Casey, all of Shelton; as well as many cousins. He was predeceased by nieces Mary Pillsbury and Carol Fainer; and brother-in-law, Edward Fainer. Funeral services will take place on Thursday, January 5, 2012 at 9:00 am from the Wakelee Memorial Funeral Home, 167 Wakelee Ave., Ansonia. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 AM in Sts. Peter and Paul Church, 105 Clifton Ave., Ansonia. Interment will be in Sts. Peter and Paul Cemetery, Derby. Family and friends may call on Wednesday, January 4, 2012, from 4:00 to 7:00 PM, Panikhida at 6:30 PM.
