Obituary of Michael Skurat SR.

SKURAT-Michael "Mickey" D.J. Skurat, age 83 of Oxford, died May 10, 2012 at the Midstate Medical Center, Meriden. He was born in Ansonia on October 30, 1928, son of the late Michael and Beatrice (Marazzi) Skurat. He was a graduate of Pine High School and New Haven State Teachers College. A WWII Veteran he served four years (1945-1949) in the US Naval Submarine Service. After active duty he remained in the US Naval Reserve and retired in 1967 with 22 years of service as a Lieutenant. He was a lifetime member of the US Submarine Veterans Inc., and a Holland Club Member. Mr. Skurat retired as Chief of Fire and Emergency Medical Services for the State of CT at the Southbury Training School. Chief Skurat was a life member of the CT Career Fire Chief's Assoc., the CT Fire Service Instructors Assoc., and CT Fire Marshal's Assoc. He was a State Instructor of Emergency Medical Technicians. In 1993 he was awarded the "Man of the Year" by the American Red Cross for his promotion of their CPR programs. Before his retirement, he was active in the Litchfield Hills Pipes and Drums as a drummer and drum major. He leaves four daughters, Joanne Skurat of Southington, Donna Lynn (Joseph) Urbanski of Southington, Beatrice Tzucanow of CA and Michelle (William) Krichbaum of NH; a brother, Ronald (Mary) Skurat of Seymour; 11 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; as well as several nieces and nephews. In addition to his beloved wife of 41 years, he was predeceased by a son, Michael D.J. Skurat, Jr. and a brother, John Skurat. Funeral services will take place on Tuesday, May 15, 2012 at 10:00 am in the Wakelee Memorial Funeral Home, 167 Wakelee Ave., Ansonia. Interment with Military Honors will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, where he and his wife, Phyllis, will repose together forever. Family and friends may call on Monday, May 14, 2012 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM.
