Obituary of James A. Somers

James A. Somers, age 80, beloved husband of Martha E. Anderson Somers of Trumbull, died peacefully on November 22, 2024 at St. Vincent’s Medical Center with his family by his side.  Jim was born in Hartford, Connecticut to the late Robert L. and Isabelle M. Somers on December 6, 1943. He was raised in Wethersfield before his family moved to Bridgeport, where his father took a new job.  His family moved to Stratford and then finally settled in Trumbull. Jim graduated from Trumbull High School in 1962.  He was a graduate of the American Institute of Banking and used his education in the banking industry for 43 years.  He retired as Vice President and Market Area Manager for People’s United Bank in 2010.  After retiring, Jim continued working as a part-time driver for Corporate Mailing Services in Shelton, CT.  Throughout his life and career, Jim was involved in many community organizations and activities.  He ran the Quarter Century Club at People’s United Bank, was the past President of the Trumbull Chamber of Commerce, past Vice Commodore of East End Yacht Club, past Co-Chair of the Trumbull Business Education Initiative (BEI), and was a member of the Gaelic Club of Fairfield.  He was well known for his uncanny ability to plan epic trips.  He took groups all over the world.  Trips to places like Quebec, Montreal, Switzerland, France, Italy, Austria, England, Ireland, Iceland and many other European destinations. There were many domestic trips as well, such as numerous flea markets, New York City, ski resorts, wineries, and Salem, MA.  Jim was perhaps most well known for his love of Divco milk trucks.  In recent years, you could always find him driving his truck in parades and attending car shows, where he won many awards.  In addition to his wife of 26 years, he is survived by his oldest daughter Lisa Oliverius of NE; his only son Keith W. Somers of Oxford; and youngest daughter Nicole P. Sypher and her husband, James of SC;  He is also survived by his stepdaughter, Sarah Forster and her husband, Ed of Oxford; stepson, Christopher Smith of SC; and his cherished 13 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren, who lovingly referred to him as Bobo; and his former spouse, Patricia L. Somers of Beacon Falls.  He was predeceased by a brother, Robert Somers and a sister, Gail Somers.  Jim touched so many lives with his generous and caring heart.  The world will not be the same without him.
