Obituary of Irene E. Charney

Irene E. Charney, age 85 of Oxford, beloved wife of the late Frank J. Charney, Jr. died peacefully on July 21, 2023, in the comfort of her home surrounded by her family.  Born in Bronx, NY, she was the daughter of the late Paul and Irene Gliganic Mason. Mrs. Charney was a long-time resident of Stratford, before moving to Oxford in 2018.  She worked as the head cashier for the former Waldbaums Supermarket of Hawley Lane, Trumbull, for many years until the time of her retirement.  Mrs. Charney enjoyed watching the Sunday Nascar Races and was a lifelong fan of the Washington Commanders and Green Bay Packers.  She will be long remembered for her special love for her family.

She is survived by her devoted children, Craig (Kim) Charney of TX, Gary Charney of Stratford, and Karen (Terry) McIlhoney of Oxford; daughter-in-law, Michele Charney of Stratford; cherished grandchildren, Frank Charney of Stratford, Nicholas Charney of CA and Alexis Charney of VT, Sonny Novotny of Seymour and Cody Novotny of VT, Alex Charney of Stratford, Joseph Elwell, Jr. of Bristol and David Elwell of New Hartford; great-grandson, David Elwell, Jr. of New Hartford.  In addition to her husband of 53 years, Mrs. Charney was predeceased by a son, Brian Charney.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated in St. Mark Church, 500 Wigwam Lane, Stratford at a date and time to be announced.  Interment will be private.  The Wakelee Memorial Funeral Home, 167 Wakelee Ave., Ansonia, is in care of arrangements.  Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O.
