Obituary of Doris M. Burns

Doris M. Dripchak Burns, age 82 of Seymour, beloved wife of the late Robert G. Burns, died peacefully on September 3, 2023 at Griffin Hospital.  Born in Derby on August 19, 1941, she was the daughter of the late Paul and Mildred Zuraw Dripchak.  Mrs. Burns was a lifelong Valley resident and a 1958 graduate of Ansonia High School.  In 1961 she earned a Diploma in Nursing from the Waterbury Hospital School of Nursing and enjoyed a long career as a registered nurse.  Mrs. Burns worked at Griffin Hospital for 32 years until the time of her retirement in 1994, having worked in ICU for many years and then later as a recovery room and short-stay nurse on the surgical floor.  Mrs. Burns attended Sts. Peter and Paul Greek Catholic Ukrainian Church, was a member of the Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic War Veterans Ladies Auxiliary and the Greek Catholic Union.  She was a Communicant of the Church of the Good Shepherd, Seymour, for many years.  Mrs. Burns was a member of the Waterbury Hospital School of Nursing Alumni Association, as well as the Seymour and Ansonia Senior Centers.   She and her husband hosted many family gatherings over the years but will most fondly be remembered for the annual St. Patrick’s Day Pool Tournaments they hosted for over 25 years.  She enjoyed traveling, especially to Las Vegas, Cape Cod and Hampton Beach, trips to the casinos with her friends, crocheting, baking, playing bingo and tending to and sharing the vegetables from her garden.  Mrs. Burns collected 100’s of decorative spoons, many were gifts from friends and family from around the world.  She will be long remembered for sharing her ethnic Ukrainian traditions, especially making pierogies with her family and friends, and for her special love and devotion to her family – especially for her grandchildren.

She is survived by her devoted children, Jennifer Ignace and her husband, Mark and Kenneth Burns and his fiancé Wendy Romano, all of Seymour; cherished grandchildren, Robert Burns (Lydia Krohelski) and Michael Burns (Raquel Okonkwo) of  Seymour, Brittany Ignace and her husband Mike Savrine, Benjamin,  Brianna and Joshua Ignace all of Seymour; her grand-dogs Macy, Koda and Gus; a sister in-law, Mary Etta Potter of Seymour, as well as several nieces and nephews and many cousins.  In addition to her husband of 50 years, she was predeceased by a brother, Donald Dripchak.
