Obituary of Sylvester "Sal" Edward Fusco

Sylvester “Sal” Edward Fusco, age 87, beloved husband of Linda Loguidice Fusco of Derby, died peacefully on July 10, 2023, surrounded by his family at the Saint Raphael Campus of Yale New Haven Health.  Born in New Haven on November 17, 1935, he was the son of the late Sylvester and Theresa Buismato Fusco. Mr. Fusco was raised in New Haven and was a proud U.S. Army National Guard Veteran.  Mr. Fusco enjoyed a long career in sales and customer service.  His most favorite job came after retirement when he took a part time job as customer service representative, tutoring patrons about the finer points of horse racing at the New Haven Teletrack, now known as Sportshaven. Sal was a people person, and this job was the perfect fit. He took great pride in his interactions with patrons, wanting to give them the best experience possible. Sal was also very active in local politics. In the 1970’s, Mr. Fusco served as an alderman in the city of New Haven. After moving to Derby in the 1980’s, he served a brief term as an Alderman (1990’s), then was elected as the City Sheriff /Constable, a position he proudly held for 20 years. He also served as Justice of the Peace until his passing. He was a past member of the Melebus Club and the Derby Democratic Town Committee. Together with his wife, he enjoyed many years at their condo in Kennebunkport, ME, attended countless concerts and participated annually in the CT Wine Trail.

In addition to his wife of 47 years, he is survived by his devoted daughter, Jennifer (Peter) Zoppi of Cheshire; cherished granddaughters, Oliva Grace and Ella Rose Zoppi of Cheshire, his brothers-in-law and good buddies Elmer Tomaselli and Angelo DeMatteo as well as several dear nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by sisters, Freda Novino, Mary Tomaselli and Josephine DeMatteo; a brother, Anthony Fusco, as well as sister in-law Ann Vessicchio Fusco and brother-in-law Albert Novino.
