Obituary of Sarah Jane Hedborg

Sarah Jane (Sally) Hedborg who claimed to be 29, was a 35 year resident of Westfield, then retired to North Branford, CT, died peacefully, with her daughters at her side, Tuesday, May 26, 2015 at Connecticut Hospice, Branford, CT. A memorial service will be held for Evergreen Woods friends and staff in the Reece Room, North Branford, CT, on Wednesday, June 10, 2015 at 10AM. A second memorial service will be at the Presbyterian Church, Westfield, NJ, on Saturday, June 13, 2015 at 10 AM, with interment to follow at the Revolutionary War Cemetery 140 Mountain Ave, Westfield, NJ. Mrs. Hedborg was born in Lawton, Oklahoma, June 5, 1922. She was raised in a military family and lived in many exotic places including Hawaii, the Philippine’s, Puerto Rico and many places in the USA. Settling in San Francisco, California, she had a chance meeting on a cable car with a handsome man (Melvin Edgar Hedborg). They married June 17, 1956 at the Presidio, San Francisco, CA. They moved to Westfield, NJ in 1960 with their twins, and raised their family. She spent her life as a volunteer: teaching Sunday school, raising funds for the Westfield Day Care Center and the Little Shop, a lunch monitor at Lincoln Elementary school, PTA ,and was a devoted girl scout leader for 10 years from Brownies up to Seniors (the girls in the troop affectionately referred to her as Hurricane Hedborg). She continued to volunteer when she moved to Evergreen Woods in North Branford, CT by reading to the blind, working at the Country Store, and on the movie committee. She served on the employee appreciation fund committee and as the representative for her building. She continued to enjoy playing Bridge, and was one of the Duplicate Bridge Champions with her partner, and joined groups for other games as well. She was active in Bible Study and relished life. She always had a smile, a kind word, and a quick wit, and will be remembered for her loving, generous nature. Sally Hedborg was preceded in death by her parents Col. Arthur Oscar Walsh and Juanita Elizabeth (nee Stout) Walsh, her husband Melvin Edgar Hedborg, and her brother Lt. Col. Robert A. Walsh. She is survived by her twin daughters: Holly Hedborg Miller and husband Christopher of Shelton, CT and Sharon Sally Wells and husband Francis J. of Tucson, AZ; six grandchildren: Christina Elizabeth Wells, Sarah Anne Wells, Francis Joseph Wells Jr, Joshua Adam Wells, Stephen Michael Miller and Andrew Kyle Miller; nephews Robert Arthur ‘Duke’ Walsh II and wife Mary Lewis; Robert Hedborg Craig and wife Gail, niece Virginia Walsh Allgood and husband Charles Allgood; two grand nephews, three grandnieces and one great grandnephew, and a dear cousin Susan Smith and son, Michael Smith. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Adler Geriatric Assessment Center, Attn: Kathleen Maturo – Director, 20 York St, New Haven, CT 06510 or Connecticut Hospice, 100 Double Beach Road, Branford, CT 06405.
