Obituary of Marie Margaret Savrine

Savrine – Marie Margaret Savoie Savrine, age 85 of North Windham, beloved wife of the late Thomas J. Savrine, died peacefully in her home on April 16, 2014. During her long illness she was cared for by her son David and his wife Diane. Born in Shippegan, New Brunswick, Canada on March 5, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Madeliene Paulin Savoie. After the tragic loss of their Father and subsequent breakdown of their Mother, Marie and several of her siblings were split up to live with various families. Marie Margaret was sent to be raised with her Uncle John and Aunt Olga Savoy of Shelton (CT), and their family of six children. As a young adult and later, she was able to visit with her Mother and siblings on the Acadian Peninsula in New Brunswick, and reestablish long-term family ties. In 1949 Margaret married the love of her life, Thomas J. Savrine of Shelton, and they stayed together until his death in 2007. Before moving to North Windham in 2006, she was a resident of Oxford, Seymour, and Derby for many years. She was a member of Saint Mary’s Church where she was an active volunteer in the Ladies Guild, and especially enjoyed working the kitchen for the annual Church Festival. Before her retirement, Mrs. Savrine worked as an operating room technician at Griffin Hospital for many years. Marge was a great cook and baker, especially of Italian food, holiday recipes, and traditional Acadian meat pies. She had a natural artistic flair and later enjoyed oil painting. She is survived by her devoted sons, Thomas J. (Lynda) Savrine, Jr. of Rensselaer, NY, and David J. (Diane) Savrine of North Windham; cherished grandchildren, Elizabeth and Phillip Savrine of NY state; Jessica and Jeremy Perron Page and Jamie Perron of Windham CT; and special great-grandchildren Lilliana, Josie, Julian, and Miley, who brightened her final years. She is also survived by brothers Luc and David Savoie; and sisters Emile Paulin, Jeanne LeBrun, and Bernadette Dotto, all of Canada. “Aunt Margaret” or “Tante Marguerite” is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Savrine is predeceased by her beloved grandson Justin T. Savrine. Her American siblings that have passed away include: Arthur, Reynold, John, and Otto “Butch” Savoy, plus sisters, Louise Romano and Anna DiTullio. Margaret’s Canadian siblings that pre-deceased are brothers Thomas, Alfred, Pierre, and Jean Savoie, and sister Alice Mallet. The family also wishes to thank home-care aides Joann and Caroline for their dedicated support and friendship to Marge. Funeral services will take place on Tuesday, April 22, 2014, at 10:00 am from the Wakelee Memorial Funeral Home, 167 Wakelee Avenue, Ansonia, CT. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 am in St. Mary’s Church, 212 Elizabeth St., Derby. Interment will follow at Southford Cemetery, Oxford, CT.
